Following the Marne and the grand-Couronné battles, On Sept. 20, 1914, German forces launch a new offensive on the Woëvre and the Meuse Coast, which have lost some of their defenders.

The late arrival of reinforcements does not prevent German troops to remain in St-Mihiel where they will cross the Meuse and in the Camp des Romains fort which was taken on Sept. 25, 1914.

As a dramatic consequence the road, the railway and the canal running from Commercy to Verdun are cut, and the rail traffic between Bar-le-Duc and Commercy via Lérouville also becomes impossible.
